At the moment, a user has to log-in to the YAWL engine and check if he/she has work waiting. Is there a way to send an e-mail notification to the user (with a link to the task) so they can begin?
AFAIK there is no standard way of configuring YAWL such that it sends eMail notifications to participants for whom work items are started. I think that this would be a useful feature for future YAWL versions.
Is there anyone who has done that sort of extension before?
The Mail Service is described in the YAWL User Manual. In the standard YAWL distribution, the mail service is active. All you need to do is to choose "mailService" in the custom service attribute of the decomposition in the YAWL editor.

Why can't you the yawl mail service? Have you tried that? You can also try to set a timer after the workitem have started and then send the email.
