I wanted to upgrade to the new yawl version 3.0.1. However, after installing it I found out that I could not open any of my YAWL specifications created in YAWL2.3. Is there a way around this or do I have to remodel using YAWL3.0?

should be upwards compatible
I haven't had any problems going from 2.3 to 3.0 except some rare layout problems. The new YAWL editor should be able to read the specs. If you want, send me a spec by email and I'll have a look.
